English - Literature and Society, B.A.

The major develops skills in the analytical interpretation of historically and culturally diverse Anglophone literatures and their social impact; it fosters creative expression as well as rhetorical acuity in multimedia formats; and all three of its concentrations prepare students for engaged and effective public citizenship.

Requirements

Must complete at least 10.5 credits in the department at the 200 level or above.

1. Two of the following foundation courses, one of which must be in the area of concentration (recommended to be completed by the end of sophomore year):

4. Four of the following literary history courses (one must be chosen from courses with an asterisk):

6. One more 200 or 300-level ENG course, which can be a literature/culture course from a foreign language department

7. Capstone

A designated advanced project, declared in the Junior Seminar, such as a research seminar (RS), internship, CSRI, honors project, or other pertinent experience. Education students may substitute student teaching (EDU 410, EDU 420, and EDU 430).

Teaching Certification

Students who are interested in pursuing K-12 certification to teach English/Language Arts should seek admission to the Teacher Education Program. See the Education department section for application and certification information.

EDU 302 may satisfy the requirement for an elective in any of the concentrations of the English major. Education students may substitute student teaching (EDU 410, EDU 420, and EDU 430) for their capstone experience.

Students are required to take ENG 311; and one course from ENG 323 or ENG 327; and one course from ENG 345, ENG 347, ENG 351, or ENG 369.
