ART 221 - Studio Art Topics: Materials Lab (1)There is a tendency to see materials only for their superficial quality. In this studio art course, students will use hands-on & physical research to explore the potentials of a diverse range of art & non-art materials through a series of rapid building exercises. Starter materials may include foam (eps/pink construction/upholstery), wood, metal sheeting, plastic (sheeting/acrylic), fabric, plaster, cement, resin, and rope, but students will also be encouraged to find their own raw materials to work with. The classroom will become a laboratory for students to investigate new and unexpected ways of using materials to devise new craft methods for their work. Students will learn shop basics as they dissect, disrupt, and deepen their understanding of innate material properties. We will look at historical and contemporary examples of artwork and fine design as students create their own sculptures and design objects (lighting/furniture) that illustrate the new material properties they’ve discovered.
This course entails an additional materials fee of approximately $80 per student. Prerequisite(s): Any 100-level Studio Art course or ART 200. (Fine Arts)
