ENG 106 - Book Arts (W) (1)Working in the Van Etten Lacey House, using the Washington Press and bindery resources, we will immerse ourselves in various kinds of academic writing, while learning basic letterpress techniques, designing and printing broadsides, and basic bookbinding (pamphlet style). To make decorated paper, we will learn suminagashi, the Japanese art of floating ink, and Japanese stab binding. We will research about designing words on the page, and conduct additional research through interviews with book artists, as we study their work. We plan to make a field trip to the Special Collections at the University of Iowa to be inspired by their collection of Artists books. Not open to students who have previously completed a First Year Writing Course. (First Year Writing Seminar (FYW)) (Humanities)
