POL 352 - Topics: Parties and Interest Groups (1)

In this course, we examine two of the most maligned organizations in American politics: political parties and special interest groups. The course is centered around the question of whether these groups hinder or enhance democratic governance in the US. In exploring the origins, importance, and political consequences of these two types of groups, we’ll try to understand how they serve as intermediaries between the people and their government. We’ll assess the role of parties and interest groups by developing a scientific understanding of their impact on our democracy. This course will cover the historical development of the US party system, starting in the 18th century through the modern party system we use today. As we approach the modern party system, we’ll turn our attention to how interest groups emerged from changes to parties, and examine how these groups influence our political system and accrue power through lobbying, political action committees, and the role of money in elections and legislation.
