BIO 108 - Topics: The Science of COVID (1)

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has had a profound impact on all aspects of our lives, including our personal, social, political, and economic well-being. To effectively address the challenges posed by this disease, it is essential to have a fundamental understanding of what it is, how the virus spreads, and the current medical interventions available. This course will explore the basic concepts of biology related to viral infections and the immune response. We will examine the replication cycle of viruses and the criteria for a disease to be classified as a pandemic. Additionally, we will delve into the current treatments for COVID-19 and similar diseases, and discuss the rising importance of messenger (m)RNA vaccines in human health.
