FRE 254 - Rule Breakers (in English) (1)

This course will focus on the work of a diverse group of women writers and film directors from the 20th and early 21st centuries who hail from France, Guadeloupe, Senegal and Algeria.  Together, we will examine how these creators challenge, transgress and reimagine traditional norms of gender, family, culture and class as well as artistic conventions of genre and style. This collection of life-writing, film and fiction will take us on a cultural and geographic journey through the French-speaking world that foregrounds the experiences and perspectives of women. It will also provide us with powerful lenses through which to reflect on our own lives and the ways in which the narratives we construct to make sense of our experiences are shaped by cultural and social forces. This discussion-based course will include writing and research assignments as well as oral presentations.

All work in English. No knowledge of French required. This course counts as an elective for the major or minor in French and for GSS credit.
