A minimum of 10 courses distributed as follows:


  • At least one course in Political Thought
  • At least two courses in International Relations and Comparative Government (at least one at the 300 level)
  • At least two courses in American Politics and Public Policy (at least one at the 300 level)
  • One course in statistics: STA 201   or STA 348  
  • POL 230  
  • Two additional courses above the 100 level one of which must be at the 300 level
  • As the capstone for the major, POL 483 , or, for qualified students, course credit for an independent project directed toward pursuit of departmental honors

 

The Department strongly encourages students to participate in an internship or comparable off-campus program while at Cornell.

Note:


Majors who have a special interest in legislative and electoral politics should take POL 172 , POL 280 /POL 380 , POL 325 , POL 363 , and POL 364 . Politics courses of particular value to pre-law students include POL 122 , POL 172 , POL 364 , POL 365 , and POL 366 . Law schools will accept majors in any academic discipline.

Teaching Certification:


Students who are interested in pursuing K-12 certification to teach social studies should seek admission to the Teacher Education Program. See the Education  department section for application and certification information.
