Global Citizenship

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Instruction

The Global Citizenship minor seeks to integrate a student’s major with a multifaceted understanding of cultures and societies beyond the United States. The program promises to deepen their knowledge of a region or culture of the world and prepare them for active and informed participation in that region or culture, culminating with study abroad or a globally focused internship. Courses in the minor are drawn from the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Students, with the help of their advisors, will choose a group of courses that focus on a particular region, culture, or theme. These are not necessarily discrete geographical regions, but may contain connections to the United States in the form of diasporas and migratory movement. Examples include, but are not limited to, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, or a focus on cross-cultural migration.

Requirements

The minor consists of 6 course credits.  No more than 2 of these courses may count toward another major or minor.

Two (2) language courses beyond the 103 level

All Global Citizenship students are required to attain depth in a language other than English, typically by taking at least two language courses beyond the 103 level. International students with fluency in a language other than English will take an additional Core or Global Focus course as a substitute.

Global Focus - 3 course credits

The Global Focus consists of three courses, selected with the approval of the student’s  advisor.  At least two of the courses must address the particular region, culture, or theme of study; one course may relate to global citizenship generally, but not necessarily focus on the student’s selected region, culture, or theme. Additional language courses beyond those applied to the language course requirement above, including introductory-level courses in another language relevant to the student’s focus, may count toward the Global Focus.

At least one of the three Global Focus course credits must be an off-campus experience:

  • Semester (or summer) of participation in a Cornell-approved Off-Campus Study program.

  • A Cornell-sponsored OCAAT course with a significant travel component outside the US.

  • An off-campus internship. This may be an international internship or a domestic internship where the student learns about the global connections of a U.S. business or organization.
