RUS 181 - Russian Encounters with the ‘Other’ (W) (1)Examination of works of literature and film that reveal historical and contemporary trends in Russian culture with an emphasis on Russia’s relationship to its past and to other cultures. We will focus on works in which the characters encounter–often in violent ways–those who are different. Although the works are fictional, most are based on actual historical events, and speak to some of the enduring issues within Russian culture, such as the relationship between the State and the individual, and Russia’s attitude toward the West. Conducted in English. Not open to students who have previously completed a First-Year Writing Course. (First Year Writing Seminar (FYW)) (Humanities)
