ART 220 - Topics: Gallery Hopping as Artistic Research (1)

In this course, students will explore the world of contemporary art and relate this research back to their individual art practices. We will engage in virtual and in-person “gallery hopping” (visiting a number of galleries in quick succession) to view a broad spectrum of contemporary visual art. The goal of this class is to equip students with a rich understanding of current trends in the field of contemporary art and respond creatively.

In this course, students will embark on a series of virtual “gallery walks,” where we collectively explore contemporary art galleries in New York City and Los Angeles remotely. We will expand on this with presentations from visiting speakers, videos, and critical theory that generate classroom conversations. At the end of each week, students will be given prompts for studio assignments to produce a work or works of art that incorporate elements of their research. <p>Students make multiple trips to Iowa City to visit the Stanley Museum of Art, Public Space One, and the University of Iowa’s Galleries.

Some materials will be provided in class, but students will have the flexibility to work with materials of their own choosing.

There will be a course fee of $170 to cover the cost of some art materials and fees for visiting speakers.

Prerequisite: ART 103 , ART 104 , ART 115 , or ART 200 . This course has an additional materials fee listed in self-service. No alternate grade option. [SA]
