ENG 201 - Introduction to Literary Studies (1)

Transporting us across time and cultures, outside of the familiar and into new worlds–what a wild ride literature takes us on! How can reading and analytical strategies help us appreciate how literature works its spell? In this introduction to the English major you will hone tactics for reading, analyzing and interpreting works of literature within and beyond their cultural moment, including the illuminating work of close reading. The class focuses on understanding literary conventions and the challenges posed to them by writers, engaging with multiple genres or forms of writing (including hybrid ones), and investigating critical inquiry and theory (including creative approaches) to open up our reading experiences. We will develop our writing and research skills as we explore a variety of texts, including ones from diverse cultural moments and historical periods.

Check with Self-Service for the specific texts to be explored in your section.
