FRE 355 - Situating French-Language Film (1)Cinema was born in Paris on December 28, 1895, at 9 in the evening. Why then? Why there? In this course, students will learn about the socio-historical context in which cinema appeared and evolved. They will be introduced to important periods, movements, and directors in French and Francophone filmmaking from the beginning with the Lumière brothers to Ousmane Sembene, the father of African cinema, to the present day. Students will refine their critical vocabulary and analytical skills, understanding how films are constructed texts and how the time and place of their production impacts their meaning. Prerequisite(s): FRE 305 , FRE 306 , FRE 307 , or permission of the instructor. Offered subject to the availability of faculty. (Humanities) (Writing Encounter)
