SPA 369 - Topics: Cinematic Visions of Childhood and Migration in Latin America (1)

This course will provide a critical survey of Latin American cinema by focusing on narratives of migration and the representation of children’s subjective experience. From early nonfiction cinema and the major films of the New Latin American Cinema movement to the more recent works of contemporary filmmakers in the region and its diaspora, students will examine the intersections of childhood, class, race, and gender in the historical contexts of extractive capitalism, authoritarian regimes, globalization, and transnational mobility. Work for the class will include written responses, a short essay, and a presentation. Prerequisite: SPA 311
