PHY 106 - Science through Film and Fiction (W) (1)

Scientific topics and issues found in selected novels and feature films are used to investigate the nature of science and the scientific process. Students will investigate specific scientific concepts and use them as case studies illustrating the role of science and technology in society. The essence of physics is that reality can be modeled using mathematical equations and this course will extend those ideas to more modern concepts, like virtual reality and artificial intelligence. For example, if a computer is used to model all the physical and chemical processes in a living cell, then is the computer alive or is it simply simulating life? In addition to novels and films, students will also engage in simple hands-on experiments.

Students will explore a range of writing styles aimed at a variety of audiences, from scientific reports to persuasive popular science articles. Intended for non-science majors Not open to students who have previously completed a First-Year Writing Course.
