PHI 215 - Topics: Philosophy through Film (1)

Philosophy through Film is designed to provide an introduction to core philosophical questions concerning the meaning of life, using films to gain access to these questions. The ideas of major philosophers will be discussed as a background for understanding the films. In the light of what these philosophers say, and through the medium of films, we shall explore philosophical themes such as: conceptions of the good life, different conceptions of cosmic order, our relation to nature, the limits of science, the question of free will, the loss of faith in a secularized world, the significance of death, the place of the individual in society, and issues concerning authenticity, commitment, personal identity, community, gender, and the loss of meaning in the modern world.
