ART 220 - Topics: Working with the Figure

In this course, students will work in a variety of media to explore different methods and approaches to representing the human body in 2-dimensional media. The course will begin with an anatomical overview and structural studies to build a working knowledge of human anatomy. Expanding from there, we will work from figure models to examine movement, value and volume in the body. We will work with a variety of color media to explore color temperature and observed color in the body. The course will also use photo references to explore narrative and mood in figure drawing and painting. Students will work from nude and clothed models in class. The course instructor provides guidance through lecture, demonstration, individual feedback and critique. Grading is based on willingness to experiment and take chances, time invested in the work, participation in class critiques, improvement throughout the block and implementation of concepts covered in class (regardless of student’s skill level). The course work will require some written work. Required materials include a complete list of painting supplies, which will be provided the first day of class. The instructor will provide a list of suggested materials for the course. Students will have some flexibility with the specific materials used. Options include pencil, charcoal, ink, acrylic paint or watercolor.

This course has an additional materials fee of approximately $125 per student. Prerequisites: ART 103  or ART 104  (2D). No alternate grade option. [SA]
