PHI 204 - Symbolic Logic (1)An introduction to formal argument analysis, including first order predicate logic and mathematical logic. Logical reasoning is fundamental to all human inquiry. Symbolic logic focuses specifically on deductive (as opposed to inductive) reasoning, using abstract formal languages to consider the underlying basis of such reasoning. Such logic is of both theoretical and practical interest. It has been important in the development of contemporary mathematics and computer science, linguistics and psychology. The study of such logic should enhance skills in analysis and reasoning, contributing to greater success in other courses and in testing that utilizes such skills (the LSAT, for example).
