ART 257 - Medusa’s Gaze and 17th Century Italian Art (1)Employs images of Medusa and her story as an introduction to the role of the artist in the seventeenth-century with a focus on Italian art and its influence on other European artists. The course includes the beginnings of queer theory with the work of Caravaggio and Guido Reni as well as more difficult topics such as the symbolism and reality of sexual assault with examinations of the work of Bernini, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Artemisia Gentileschi. Gentileschi also offers the class the first significant examination of the role of the woman artist in the early modern era. Elective for Medieval and Early Modern Studies majors. Alternate years.
