ART 242 - Painting (1)This course is an introduction to the technical, analytical and theoretical skills related to contemporary painting. Students will work with acrylic paint to develop a thorough understanding of image construction through color and mark-making. While perceptual painting is a major component of the class, varied methods of paint application, sensitivity to color and critical analysis of one’s own work are also stressed. Working with still life, landscape, human figures and abstraction, students will learn a wide variety of technical painting skills and also bolster their visual literacy and critical reasoning skills. Course format consists primarily of studio work. The course instructor provides guidance through lecture, demonstration, individual feedback and critique. Grading is based on willingness to experiment and take chances, time invested in the work, participation in class critiques, improvement throughout the block and implementation of concepts covered in class (regardless of student’s skill level). The course work will require some written work. No alternative grade option.<p>This course has an additional materials fee of approximately $197 per student. Prerequisite: any 100-level studio art course or ART 200. No alternate grade option. [SA] (Fine Arts)
