EDU 200 - Race and Educational Inequity (SYS) (1)

This course will explore the relationship between educational policies and school segregation as well as the persistent inequality of educational opportunity for historically marginalized students. Students will examine demographic data on educational attainment, analyze the policies that attempt to alleviate OR reproduce educational inequality, and describe what assumptions lie behind current reform ideas for students of color with particular emphasis on the nature of school curriculum. We will evaluate the dynamics of current debates by referencing long-standing tensions among the different purposes of schooling for different groups of people we have in our nation. As an introduction to qualitative research students will conduct interviews with various members of the k12 community and present their findings as a digital documentary or story map. Only open to sophomores.
