CHE 200 - The Environment & Public Health (SYS) (1)

How do environmental issues such as climate change and ozone depletion affect public health? What are the effects of air, water, and soil pollution on the health of communities around the world? How are particular groups of people differently affected by an environmental crisis? This course will consider the impact of environmental issues on public health in our community and around the world with special attention to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan and the contamination of soil in our local community. We will learn how to measure the amount of lead contamination in the soil, test garden soil samples for members of the community, and communicate the results, risks, and possible remediation options. Students from all academic backgrounds will be able to apply their skills and knowledge. No college level science experience is necessary. Only open to sophomores.
