ENG 372 - Japanese Cinema Before Anime (1)

This course (in English) will introduce students to Japanese films before anime, focusing in particular on the films of World War II. We’ll explore how the war and its aftermath looked through the eyes of Japanese filmmakers as compared with Hollywood films, and consider the cultural, political, and social shifts and exchanges from which anime emerged. All films will be subtitled or dubbed in English, and the course will be taught in English. Prerequisite: writing-designated course (W), or ENG 201 , ENG 202 , or ENG 215 . Alternate years or every third year.
