ENG 275 - Topics: Nature & Environment in 19th Cen Eng Lit (1)

A study of environmental criticism, conservation and representations of nature in poetry, novels, and essays of the nineteenth-century. The industrial revolution brought with it including London fog (which was really smog), urban crowding with poor sanitation, newly observed weather patterns, and other environmental shifts and degradations. Some authors raised alarms directly, others drew attention to the dark underside of industry with fictional characters and literary devices, while still others responded by creating nostalgic, pre-industrial worlds. Students will develop critical reading, writing and technology-based research skills. Prerequisite: Writing course (W)
