ART 276 - Topics in Art History: Gods & Kings: Art and Archaeology of the Ancient Near East (1)

A survey of the ancient art of the Near East from the rise of Sumer in Mesopotamia to the founding of the Persian Empire (with special focus on the civilizations of the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, Assyrians, and Persians). The course provides a detailed look at the art, architecture, and material culture of the Persian Empire from Cyrus II to Alexander the Great with careful consideration of religious and cultural perspectives as well as western European constructions of “the other” that still influence diplomatic relations today.
