ANT 200 - Food Justice (SYS) (1)

Where does our food come from? What impact does producing that food have on our communities? On the environment? What kind of working conditions do food-system workers experience? What causes famine? Crop failure? How do we respond to hunger? Is access to healthy, nutritious food a human right? A public health concern? A function of how much money you make, your racial or ethnic identity or where you live? How do people get food, organize food distribution, and eat around the world? In this SYS course, we will focus on Iowa - where an incredible amount of food is produced, and yet people still experience food insecurity and hunger. Over the course of the block, students will have opportunities to work with local farms, community-supported agriculture, food banks, and free meal programs. We’ll also talk to food producers and food justice advocates and work together on local solutions.<p>This course encourages citizenship in practice by focusing on informed and creative problem-solving on the issue of food justice through an anthropological lens. This course will include community engagement, field trips, and other experiential learning activities.
