ART 200 - Art & Community (SYS) (1)

In this course, students will investigate the intersection of art and the community through a series of hands-on studio art projects. What does community mean in the context of visual art? How have artists used art as a mechanism for social change? How can artists create meaningful connections with the community and give back at both local and global levels? We will learn how artists have responded to historical events and social issues that impact communities. Students will consider both historical and contemporary public art. Students will learn hands-on technical art processes that will be used for larger community engaged artworks and projects. Yes, students will be MAKING art. Major studio projects will be both collaborative and individual in nature. The focus of this course is to consider ways in which the mission of art can shift from a personal endeavor to a community connection and outreach. Students will gain skills in the visual arts, while intersecting with and contributing to the broader community. Only open to sophomores.
