BIO 108-2 - Topics in Biology (W) (1)

This course will focus on the many aspects of a particular disease, breast cancer. We will discuss not only the biological basis of the disease, but also the public health, public policy and political aspects of breast cancer. Topics will include: the basic biology of cancer, the impact of politics, advertising and metaphors (e.g. the War on Cancer, Cancer Survivors, Battling Cancer) on breast cancer, access to healthcare and health insurance, and controversies involving current breast cancer screening programs. Substantial time will be given to the writing process including reading and analyzing primary and secondary sources, and drafting and revising formal papers. CHRISTIE-POPE
